August 2018 Arizona Quail Hunting Update

Dogs !

The Monsoon Season in Arizona is still going strong.Word on the street however is that it has been spotty so predictions are Mearns Quail will be good in some areas and not so in others. The same will hold true for Scaled Quail.Gambels Quail numbers will be not so good mostly due to the lack of rain during the Winter Months. We will have a better idea when we start scouting in November.

March 2018 Update

To say that this past Arizona Quail Season was stellar would be a very considerable overstatement, the birds where there but we experienced The warmest and direst winter on record.90 days without rain and 70degree plus temps made scenting conditions almost impossible. But when the stars aligned it was still pretty decent. The good news is that since the end of February we have received close to 4 inches of rain. This Will help with our Desert Quail Reproduction as we are already seeing significant  green -up on the Desert Floor.

2018 Arizona Grand Slam -El Coronado Ranch

El -Coronado Ranch Dates are published and wont last long ! This is the only all inclusive and exclusive Wild Bird Hunting Lodge in The Desert South West.We are busy adding more property to this outstanding venue. Our award winning Patagonia Arizona Day Trip Hunts are also filling up fast and with a large population of Mearns Quail carrying over into this season we should have good numbers of Arizona Mearns Quail provided that we get a decent Monsoon.Until then we’ll be out training dogs, fishing and looking forward to our Saskatchewan Upland Bird and Waterfowl Hunts (Sept -Oct ) .

June Update & Fire Season

June Update & Fire Season

The Mowry Fire east of Patagonia

Once the Arizona Quail Hunting Season ends our little corner of the world slows down and to some extent life returns to normal. The area receives very little rain thru March until the Monsoons hit sometime in late June and early July. For those not in the know This traditionally is the “Fire Season” in South East Arizona. It happens every year.So far  lot of acres have burned (close to 50,000 ) some of the fires have been caused by humans and in the case of the still burning Mowry Fire the cause has been lighting.Thankfully damage to property has been minimal. Some Internet doom and gloom about the fires is out there, namely focused on the Sawmill Fire and of course folks who are unfamiliar with our Fire Season are a little worried. We say Relax.Sure the fires burn up Mearns Habitat but it’s needed.Give the burn areas a couple years to rejuvinate then look out ! Fire is a natural occurring factor in Grassland ecology therefore it should be welcomed as opposed to a concern.Have a look at how Southern Quail Plantations are managed, fire is an important tool for habitat Management just like it is fro Arizona Quail ..when it happens.
